Taking the MTB is reasonable, taking the Gravel Bike is fun
This is one tough but at the same time extremely rewarding tour. The ascent to “Pfälzerhütte” in Liechtenstein covers about 1’700 meters of elevation with the end being extremely steep (up to 25% on gravel). If you try riding this on a gravel bike I’d recommend as smooth as possible pedaling since otherwise the rear wheel is going to slip. On a mountain bike with adequate gearing and proper positioning on the bike this part is rideable, given you’re fit enough.
Already during the ascent the views are stunning but once at the highest point of the route, which is Pfälzerhütte, you’ll encounter rough alpine views, as far as the eye can see. To me the beauty of these landscaps seems almost ridiculous.
From Pfälzerhütte you’ll be riding an epic single trail over to Malbun, while on the descent there is a hike-a-bike part, that fortunately isn’t too long. Following this route from Malbun you’ll be descending to Steg on the main, tarmac, road, but alternatively there is a hiking trail, which is recommendable if you brought the mountain bike to the party.
Once again in Steg we’ll be ascending to the old tunnel, leading to the other side of the mountain valley you’ve just been too. From there the descent continues on gravel, single trail and some tarmac.
Back down in “Rheintal” it’s time to climb its other side on “Buchserbergstrasse” until you’re at about 1’150 meter above sea level. From there you’ll traverse for a few kilometers to then descend on another mix of gravel, single track and tarmac road and ultimately reach the starting point again.
